4 Proven Ways to Preserve Your Vegetables and Fruits
1. Freezing
This way of preserving fruits and veggies may not be new but there are ways to freeze fruits and vegetables to get the most use out of them. When freezing fruits and vegetables it’s best to store them in clean plastic bags such as ziplock.
Once veggies and fruits are washed and dried thoroughly, place in a ziplock bag removing the air. Once the air is removed seal the bag. Fruits and vegetables should be bagged according to use and place in the freezer.
Thawing and then freezing again can cause fruits and veggies to become soft and mushy losing their flavor along with encouraging a build-up of bacteria. To have success store enough fruits and veggies per bag to be thaw and used only for each setting.
2. Pickling
Another way to preserve your edibles is by a process called pickling, what you do is to make a solution with salt, vinegar, and water. Bring this solution to a boil in a pan.
Vegetables and fruits are then placed in airtight jars, pour your solutions in each jar until fruits and veggies are submerged. Once this is done seal the jar and store it.
3. Drying
The method of drying involves the removal of water from your fruits and vegetables with a dehydrator. Once your fruits or veggies are placed in the machine select the setting and you are good to go. When the drying process is completed your fruits and veggies should be dry to the touch, if there is a feeling of sponginess or stickiness foods must be returned to the dehydrator until dried. Once dried, fruits and veggies can be stored.
4. Salting
We all know that salt preserves and can be used on our edible foods, in fact, the use of salt as a preservative has-been practice way back in biblical days which is a very long time ago.
Place your veggies on a large baking pan sheet and submerge them in water followed by adding salt to the water until it begins to cling or attach to your veggies.
Once your veggies reach this process keep your veggies in this water and store them for about a week and a half in your refrigerator. Once this is done drain your veggies and cover them with more salt. Store your vegetables in a place that’s cool and dry to complete the drying process.
