How to Plant a Spring Flower Garden

Step 1 Choosing the Right Location: Location, location, location, choosing the right location will determine the success of your spring flower garden. Different plant species have different requirements. Is your spring garden going to be located in an area that’s shaded, full sun, or partial sunlight? What you don’t what to do is to install or group plants together that have different light requirements because one plant will suffer at the expense of the other. Get to know your plant material before purchase or installation.

Step 2 Soil Improvements: At the root of growing healthy plants is the soil, the soil does matter and plays a big part, most flowering plants grow their best in soils that are loose and well-drained. Incorporating organic materials such as compost, healthy (disease-free) grass clippings, leaves, aged manure, decayed plant material, etc… will help to build healthy soil or improve the soil’s structure for your spring flower garden. If a soil test is needed then by all means have one done, you can perform the test yourself or your soil test can be carried out by a lab to see the availability of nutrients along with the soil’s pH level.

Step 3 Choosing your Plants: This is the exciting part but for those who may be starting out can become a bit confusing, how many species of plants are you planning on using? Is the planting area large enough to accommodate 6-8 species of plants or is there room for only 4-5 species? Plants that are chosen should be healthy, try to avoid making purchases at a very discounted price.

If your desire is to find deals then ensure plants are healthy, choose plants that are insect and disease free, the leaves should be healthy looking, look for plants that are storky with fewer flowers. Avoid plants that are rootbound which can present issues. Knowing the height of your plants once they reach maturity will help you to place them properly or to give them the right spacing.

A bed that’s crowded with plants will encourage poor air circulation causing the leaves to drop, the taller plants and shrubs should be planted at the rear of the garden, and smaller plants can be placed at the front and along the edge. For example, the garden bed should resemble a staircase, with small or short plants to the front, then behind these plants, you will install taller plants, and next at the rear or back of the garden will be even taller plants. Remember to give plants their proper spacing. If planting a flower garden from seeds then look for planting instructions on the seed package but if seedlings are being installed then your nurseryman will be your source of information about proper spacing and height of plants at maturity including plant care.

Step 4 Mulching your Flower Bed: Mulches do not only serve as beautification but have so many other benefits, a 1-3 inch layer is sufficient. Mulches can include pine needles, bark, grass clippings, wood chip, etc… when applying mulch don’t allow the mulch to touch or come in direct contact with the flower stem, keep mulches a few inches away because mulches that are piled up against flowering plants will trap moisture which will invite garden insect pests and disease in the plant bed.

Step 5 Water Requirements and Method: When grouping plants in the same bed ensure their water requirements are the same. Water flowering plants according to their needs. Don’t over-water which can lead to root rot, a hose attachment should be attached to your hose, adjust the gauge to gentle shower so a nice gentle stream can water your plant. If the water comes out with force can not only damage delicate plants but will wash the mulch away along with disturbing the soil.

Step 6 Fertilizing Methods: Give your spring garden a boost by feeding your plants with a quality fertilizer that encourages flower bloom, some of these fertilizers include,  Organic Bulb-tone, Flower girl, Jacks Classic Blossom Booster, etc… before applying fertilizers read and follow the manufacturer’s direction for the best results.

How to Prune Flowers

To keep your spring garden looking its best flowers that are faded or have died can be removed by pinching with your fingers or a hand pruner can work as well. This action will encourage healthy fuller plants with more flower blooms.

Garden Insect Pests

Garden insect pests can turn a dream garden into a nightmare but with the right information you can strike back and win the war on these pests, here are some insecticides that will work for you. Before applying pesticides read and follow the manufacturer’s directions for the best results.
