All it takes is a little work and you will be on your way to owning a garden of this type which has style and flavor so if you are interested then continue reading as we make your dreams of owning and maintaining your very own vertical garden a reality.
Steps to take
1. Know what you want
Knowing what you want is so crucial if you want success which means you will have to start with a plan. What type of vertical garden do you want, is it a herb, vegetable, or flower garden. Knowing this will help you to get the ball rolling in the right direction.
2. Space Size
Another important fact to consider is the amount of space you’re working with, now I know that I said earlier that these gardens give you the advantage of planting in small spaces but size still matters because what you don’t want is to cram your vertical garden which can and will affect the growth of your garden plants.
Remember depending on which plants are used must grow comfortably in their permanent home. The garden plant’s size should be chosen base on the size of the planter that will be installed.
Some of the easiest plants to grow in a vertical garden are plants that grow anywhere from six inches up to one gallon going bigger than this require a little more space so your plants can sit and grow comfortably.
Here are a few plants to consider
- Chives
- Garlic
- Onion
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Beets
- Carrots
- Radishes
- Bromeliads
- Orchids
These are just a few of the many which can be used to have good success, I love the idea of having an eatable vertical garden how about you what kind of vertical garden do you dream about?
3. Vertical garden style
These gardens come in so many shapes and sizes from simple to more complex that it is just mind-blowing. Vertical gardens can be from square to rectangle, to irregular shapes to installing pots which are attached to each other in a vertical position and so on the styles of these garden seems to be almost limitless so take your time because there are so many options to choose from.
If you’re good at carpentry you can build yourself or hire a carpenter or better yet take a trip down to your garden center or hardware store they should have some in stock which will meet your needs.
A simple vertical garden you can construct
This one is a no-brainer that even a caveman can construct, if you can get a hold of a pole that is about 6 ft or taller which is not that thick in diameter, along with a few growers pots let say from 1-2 gallon.
Make 2 holes in the pot 2 near the top and 2 in the center, with the help of pieces of the wire insert it in the first hold pushing it through the next hold which is adjacent to the first hold it is like sewing with a needle and thread, keep doing this until the wire is almost used up and twine it firmly and then move on to the second holes and do the same.
Alternate the pots, so on one side you will have a pot attached to the pole, and then on the opposite side of the pole, you will have another pot, attach with wire, keep this pattern until you have reached almost to the end of the pole. As you place pots under each other leave about a foot space for proper plant growth.
Leave about 2 ft of pole free, this 2 ft of the pole will be inserted into the ground for stability. Once the pole is firm in the ground being rock solid you can now add your soil and seeds or seedlings and you are good to go. This is a cheap but yet simple way to have your very own vertical garden.
4. Location, Location, Location
This one is so important if you are going to have success, your garden plants for your vertical garden must have sufficient sunlight. All plants need some light whether full, partial, or filtered, so ensure that you place your vertical garden in an area of this sort.
5. Plants
Plants should be chosen based on the seem lighting requirements, what you don’t what is to mixed plants which have different lighting needs because one plant will suffer at the expense of the other so group plants together based on the seem lighting needs.
6. Irrigation
All plants need water no matter the amount, the key is in knowing your plant’s watering requirements and giving them adequate water, which brings us to another point plants should be grouped together according to their water needs.
If you were to group plants together which has different water requirements will be a disaster because one plant will suffer at the expense of the other unless you have a vertical garden design where the plants are placed in different or individual planters.
7. Extra Plants
Keeping a few extra plants on hand is a good idea just in case you may need to replace a plant or two so this should be something you should consider although this is not a must.
Additional Information
1. Ensure that your plants are getting fertilize, before fertilizing your plants read and follow the label as directed.
2. Don’t overwater which can lead to rot.
3. Keep an eye out for garden insect pests and treat with insecticidal soap or other treatments that are label as environmentally friendly. Read and follow the label as directed.

Constructing A Vertical Gardens is a modern and up to date need of those who love gardening and tilling plants. To some it has become part of therapy, hobby, and a productive way to spend time. Vertical gardening is an idea that is mixed with practicality, style, art and a personal supply of organic food. Some of the mentioned plants are garlic, radishes, garlic, carrots, basil, beets, chives even orchids. orchids can be a source of extra income as it is one of the exotic flowers that commands a good price. I would also love to include lettuce, sweet potatoes, eggplants, and celery. It is also important to note the location where you would plant those vegetables or flowers. It must have ample sunshine. in addition it has to have a source of water, of course, fertilizer should be at hand and insects are well kept off the area by using some insecticide not harmful to the plants. It is a good idea to put up a vertical plant garden on skyscrapers, condominiums on say the 10th floor and let them be seen as a sort of tourist attraction like the once hanging garden of Babylon
