Garlic and its Many Uses

The world of garlic

Welcome to the wonderful world of garlic where we will be looking at garlic and its many uses.

Garlic in the kitchen

As a child growing up, there was a certain time of day when the smell of garlic would come from our kitchen, and guess who it would be? It would be my father, he loved to cook. One of the ingredients that he used was garlic. Garlic has such a nice aroma and flavor, especially when used to season foods

I love the kitchen also and use garlic at times to add that BANG or WOW to my dishes. Garlic has a flavor that can wake up just about any dish. This herb can be added to soups, gravy, steam foods, broil foods, and even a pinch that can give your rice that added flavor.

Medical purposes

Garlic is famous for its use for medical purposes, the added benefit of using garlic is that this herb is all-natural so you don’t have to be concerned about side effects. I have used garlic over the years for health issues and have proven that these herbs really work.

An example of this is a sore throat, ย boil two or three cloves of garlic in 1-1 1/2 cup of water can actually bring relief, or better yet chewing a clove and swallowing the juice can also soothe a sore throat. I believe however that you would prefer boiling and then drinking 2-3 tbsp a day because even though chewing garlic is better it is not fun.

Chewing uncooked garlic really can burn, but the end result is it will work wonders for you. I have use garlic also to help fight the common cold, boiling a few cloves in 1/2 – 1 cup of water and drinking. What other benefits are there with garlic?

A word of caution

It is believed that persons that are on medication to thin their blood should stay away from garlic because it can disrupt this process, so if you are using medication of this sort be sure and check with your doctor first.

It’s vitamin content is also quiet powerful. I must also say that some of the interesting facts that you’ve listed such as the women wearing garlic and herbs instead of flowers on their wedding day, was really fun and cool.

I’m seriously considering buying a garlic in the form of a dietary supplement. However, can you recommend me an odorless one? Don’t want to drive the people around insane lol.

  5. Hi Norman,
Garlic is a staple in my kitchen. My husband and I always say, “You can’t have too much garlic.” It not only make everything taste good; it also makes everything healthier. My parents make drink with fresh garlic, fresh ginger, water, and fresh squeezed lemon juice. Any time they come down with cold symptoms, they take a swig of their “concoction”. I’ve tried it; I have to add a bit of raw honey in order to get it down, but it is healthy. Great information here. Thanks!

  8. Hi Norman,

Great article, I loved the reading!
Garlic is one of my favorite ingredients. I use it almost in all my recipes. When it is cooked, then it doesn’t have any smell, but when it is not cooked, god what a smell:) I can not speak to anyone the day I eat garlic. I’ve heard there are some tricks to make the smell disappears like for example, eating coffee beans. Have you heard about this?

Thank you for this excellent post

  9. I absolutely love the information you have presented about garlic. Even though I already use garlic on a regular basis for cooking and to help with things like the common cold, I really didn’t know about the history of it. Thanks for sharing that. I’m curious though, have you ever tried growing your own garlic? I’ve always wanted to try, just haven’t got around to doing it. If you have, do you have any advice for me?

  10. Hi Norman,
Great article on garlic – you covered a lot of things about it I didn’t know, so thanks. My mom always encourages me to use garlic as it was always a herb used around our home as kids. We loved it in rice – as you pointed out, it gives it that added flavor.

As a Spiritual practitioner, I stopped using members of the onion family a long time ago because it is traditionally known to agitate and dull the mind so it makes it very hard to meditate if used in excess. However, it does offer a lot of health benefits as your article indicates, so it’s always best to use it in moderation for sure. And, I might start adding it to my rice again from time to time. ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Love garlic in food and love the way it smells. I do not care if other people find it to be an unpleasant smell. I think it is a comforting aroma!
I did read somewhere that in the old days it was planted around the outside of a garden to keep pests away from the vulnerable plants growing toward the center. I think I will try that out this year. Do you know anything about this idea?

    • Hello Ruby so nice to here from you, garlic sure is a wonderful herb that can work wonders. Garlic is used to keep insects from out of vegetable gardens and flower beds. Garlic is usually planted around the border of the planting area to act as a barrier, some persons may even plant them through out the planting area. Hope this helps, all the best to you and have a good day.

  14. Just last night I was explaining to my kids the benefits of the garlic. I had probably added a little too much to the spaghetti sauce! I told them that it was good for them and that it would help with my daughters cold. They thought I was telling a tall tale until I showed them this very post. We all sat down in the living room and I read your entire post to them. They were actually amazed by all the benefits that garlic has to offer and now my son may use some of the info you provided in an up coming school project.
    Thanks so much for this!

(yum) Garlic is seems so powerful so will taking it in a pill cause the smell of garlic to smell out our pores? just curious..Either way I can’t wait to check out these garlic pills you recommended! Thanks for the post!

    • Hello Liz so nice to hear from you. Garlic sure do work wonders and are so beneficial to our bodies. The heat from cooking may weaken the effects but the pill will ensure that you get more of the strength. No the smell will not come out of your pores from taking the pill because the pills are odorless. Hope this help, all the best to you.
