Making your yard irresistible for parrots

In order for your yard to be inviting to parrots, there are some components that are needed which will attract them like a magnet. Below we will be looking at such components to ensure that you have success.

Shelter

Providing shelter is a must and a great way to lure parrots to your yard, the use of bright native tropical plants and broad-leafed deciduous trees are ideal. Parrots love grapes, bananas, apples, passion fruits, citrus fruits, pomegranate, mango, and papaya will not only provide them with shelter but will also be a good food source helping parrots to feel right at home.

Food

Other food sources that can be provided for parrots are cooked grains such as oatmeal, brown rice, barley, rye, pasta, wheat, whole wheat bread, spelt, whole wheat cereals, etc… cooked beans can also be given to them which includes, chickpeas, lentils, black beans, green beans. Nuts can be included in their diet, nuts should be unsalted and human-grade which are walnuts, pecan nuts, almonds, peanuts, pine nuts, cashew nuts, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, pistachios, and hazelnuts. These foods can be offered in a wide-open area where parrots can congregate.

A water source

Including a low birdbath with moving water is a great way in providing a water source for parrots both to drink and take a bath. The water should always be kept clean and fresh. Because parrots are rather large the birdbath should be  2 to 3 inches deep. One or two bird baths may be necessary depending on the number of visitors (parrots) to your yard.

Providing a few nesting boxes is ideal for parrots although other native birds and wildlife may claim ownership, making available to parrots nesting materials such as grasses that is pesticide-free, twigs, dead leaves, small sticks, small pieces of straws, feathers, cattail fluff, etc… makes great nesting materials for these exotic birds.

  1. Hi

I used to own two parrots and could not keep up with them and ended up selling them. However, I really love those birds. I hope to get at least one soon. I also would love to make my yard irresistible to these birds and you post has really opened my eyes to a lot. I will surely keep cats and dogs out of the garden area and also avoid using harmful pesticides. Thank you for such an eye opening post

  2. How to attract parrots?  I don’t know where you live but I want to be there!  Living in the US, I only see parrots who live in people’s homes.  I have friends who have a bird named Andy and he is very much a member of their family and he loves to talk.  But parrots in my yard?  I only hope to someday have the chance to see these beautiful and intelligent creatures out in their natural habitat!  Thank you for posting this informative information!

    • Yes, these exotic birds are very beautiful especially when watching them in their natural habitat, I live on a Caribbean island that is so beautiful with blue skies, white clouds, and lots of sunshine with that nice gentle cool breeze.

The key is that if you have spotted them in your area or maybe have heard of them being in your area they will visit your yard once you give them what they are looking for.

  5. Thank you for this information. I know parrots and other birds are easily attached by a nest provided in a garden. But I never knew you can easily get their attention by providing a water source. Also, I must appreciate your listing of fruits and other food like walnuts and peanut like you identified. Having birds like parrot in your garden gives life and freshness to the environment.
