How to Grow Mandevilla from Seed

The Mandevilla is a genus of tropical and subtropical flowering vines in the family Apocynaceae, these plant species are native to South America, Central America, West Indies, and the Southwestern United States.  Many species are said to also originate from the forest in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the Mandevilla plant grows as a vine producing an abundance of flowers.

These flowers range in colors from red, shades of pink, white and yellow, Mandevilla can be grown or planted directly into the ground from a grower’s pot, clippings, or seeds. Below we will be looking at how to grow Mandevilla from seeds so you can add that tropical look to your garden area.

Seed process

When seeking to grow Mandevilla from seeds the seedpod should remain on the plant to dry before removing them. Once the seedpods have dried they will turn a brown color and begin to split. The seeds will look somewhat like the seeds of dandelions, an option you can take is soaking the seeds in water for ten to twelve hours before sowing which will give good results.

The planting location

The seeds should be installed in an area that gets bright indirect sunlight,  the Mandevilla is a tropical to subtropical plant that loves the full sunlight once the plant is established and reaches maturity.

The soil type

Mandevilla requires soils that are sandy and well-drained, to build your soil it is also good to add organic material such as peat moss.

How to plant the seeds

The seeds of the Mandevilla vine should be planted shallow not deeply in order for germination to take place, the seeds should be covered slightly with soil.

Water requirements

Mandevilla doesn’t like wet feet or soil that is water-saturated which can lead to rot, soak the soil thoroughly and then allow the soil to dry out somewhat between watering.

Germination time

Within four weeks or there about the seeds should germinate.

when and how to fertilize

Once the seeds have germinated fertilize with a light application of 20-20-20, once your Mandevilla matures fertilize every two weeks in the spring and in the summer. Read and follow the manufactures direction for the best results.

The final word on growing Mandevilla from seed

The Mandevilla plant is so beautiful, this tropical beauty will give you a taste of the tropics with its flower bloom that is a show stopper so if your desire is to create a garden paradise then I suggest adding the Mandevilla plant. 1. Hi there! I just stumbled upon your site and thought I would just drop you a quick comment to say thanks. Your website has really cheered me up today. What a lovely uplifting site you have created.

I’ve just finished reading your article about growing Mandevilla. Excellent article and the flowers look lovely. I would like to see some more pictures of Mandevilla.

I don’t think Mandevilla would grow very well where I live since I’m in the U.K. and we have quite damp soil most of the time. But I really enjoyed reading your article never the less.

I look forward to reading more from you soon!

  2. Hi Norman. Mandevilla has always been one of my favourite plants. We recently sold our property where I had tried several times to grow this beautiful plant on a trellis. Unfortunately I never succeeded, I’m not sure why as I have never had any issues growing other plants. Then something amazing happened, we moved to a property with a smaller home but a much larger garden. In the side garden we discovered a beautiful, gigantic light red Mandivella growing over the top of a large archway. But now I find I need a challenge and would like to grow some more plants from the seeds that have developed. You can be certain that I will use the instructions from your blog to do this. Thank you very much for this information. Jim
