The Health Side of Grits

Yellow Grits

While eating grits may not be classed by many as breakfast food we certainly cannot deny that in many cultures, grits tops the list when it comes to breakfast time. So grits are one of the mean breakfast foods.

Many years ago white grits were a part of my diet, then the time came when I  made a switch when I was introduced to yellow grits. I had to get used to the taste but now I cannot stop eating it because

yellow grits do not have you fuller than white grits but the benefits far out ways white grits. What amazed me more is that besides the yellow grits that I enjoyed eating, I discovered a grits that is also yellow but much coarser and fills you even faster.

We call this coarse yellow grits island grits that are produced on what we call the family islands. In the Bahamas we have many islands Nassau being the capital and the other islands that are so beautiful we called the family or out islands. These islands are very quiet, with lots of beautiful beaches, white sand, and blue skies. I just thought to mention that.

So now both my household along with myself is stuck on eating yellow grits. I don’t add any butter after it’s cooked but eat it as is. Because many persons defeat the purpose by adding unhealthy butter and fats that can cause weight gain.

If you must add butter make it a lite spread or use the healthier natural butter.

With all of that said then what other benefits do yellow grits serve.

  1. Hi, Norman. A few years ago I tried some grits when I was visiting in Georgia. You are right it would take some time to get used to eating it. I have, to be honest, it was not my favorite. One question that I do have is what is grits made of?

  2. Another great read! I don’t believe I have ever eaten grits, let alone yellow grits. My breakfasts usually consists of bacon, eggs and toast. No wonder I am struggling with belly fat. What would you recommend to eat with yellow grits in the morning. I’m usually pretty hungry and tend to over eat in the morning.

  3. I was trying out a new recipe that involves grita and I had no idea what they were or with the health benefits involved were. Really good job explaining it. I will see if I can acquire the taste because I am a little bit of a picky eater but I am trying to also eat a little healthier. I may start off with a little butter though and then slowly Wayne off of it to get the fullest potential of the grit.

  4. Hi Norman. A fascinating website.
Very interesting angle on the health benefits of grits.
I noticed in other people’s comments that several ask: “What are grits? and “How do you make them?”
I would like to add; “What is the difference in ingredients between the different coloured grits?”
I think it might help to add those answers to your site because, for example, grits are unknown here in the UK.
It would help us to understand if we knew exactly what they are.
Grits come from died corn? That sounds very good for roughage.
Maybe a little recipe could be added. I would love to try them.
I think we need to look into this some more.
Thanks again Norman for making us aware of the health benefits of grits..

  5. Good information. I am a HUGE fan of oatmeal, and I eat it every morning for breakfast. I also enjoy cream of wheat, but I’ve never tried either white or yellow grits. Would it be considered in the same family as the oatmeal and cream of wheat? Do you eat it, like you would oatmeal? I never realized the excellent health benefits to yellow grits. Now you have my interest!! Great article.

    • Hello Laurie it is so good to meet you and thanks a million for those very kind words. Yellow gits sure do have its share of benefits that can do our bodies good. Yellow grits has a coarser texture than oat meal although they may look the same at first glance.

Instruction on how to cook grits can be found right on the box. All you do is measure out the amount of water based on serving size of grits, bring water to a boil, add a pinch of salt then as you pour grits, with a pot spoon stir litely.

The goal is to make sure that your grits do not get lumps but remain smooth, turn stove down so it do not burn and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. Be careful you don’t want grits to get on skin because it can really burn.

Hope this helps and thanks a million again, wishing you the best of success.

    • Hello Lester, grits makes a great choice when it comes to breakfast. Grits is made from the dry kernel of corn. Direction to cook can be found on the box. Measure out the amount of water and grits according to serving size, add water to pot along with a pinch of salt.

Bring water to a boil and add grits, with a pot spoon stir grits as you pour because if you don’t stir grits will have lumps. The goal here is to keep the grits as smooth as possible. Turn heat down and allow grits to simmer for 10 -15 minutes.

and you are good to go. Some persons add a little butter for extra flavor, but I eat it without butter. Also be very careful and do not let grits get on skin because it can really burn when hot. Hope those helps. All the best to to and please let me know how it goes. Have a good day.
