Sack gardening is a great way to grow in small spaces, this method of gardening is not new but has been around for some time. In fact, sack gardening was first introduced in 2008 because of a crisis that took place in Mathare, Kiambu, and Kibera slums. Because of food insecurity, a plan was put in place where this garden technique was brought to 22,109 households which helped more than 110,000 people.

10 Easy Steps to Organic Sack Gardening
1. Wash your bag and set it out to dry.
2. In the bottom of your bag place about 10 to 12 cm of stones.
3. On the stone layer in a vertical position your can or bottle and fill it with stones, the soil that’s used should be mixed with compost and manure. Pack this mixture around your stone column.
4. Continue this process until the bag is filled or the top of the bag is reached, carefully remove the can or bottle. Only the column of stones should be left.

6. On top of the stone column water the bag thoroughly along with the sides, ensuring that the soil has good moisture.
7. Once the soil is well moistened carefully place your plants in the holes in the sack, as you place your plants be careful not to damage the tender roots. Once your plants are installed give your plants another drink of water.
8. Don’t allow the soil to dry out completely, if the weather is dry water twice a day, if the weather is humid then once a day should be sufficient.

This is a great idea for those who may not have a yard to garden. It’s also a way to combat food insecurity! You mention these plants can’t be started from seeds using the bags but I have had great success starting seeds in my windowsill using small drinking glasses or coffee filters. They can then be transplanted to the sacks. I may try this next summer. Thank you for posting!
Thank you so much for commenting and sharing your success story. All the best to you and have a good day.

Whoa so basically a garden in a bag right where you can grow anywhere? This is a pretty cool design the people made for the crisis they were in! That is what happens when you are creative and think outside the box after all, the plant’s roots can break through rock for them to grow so I couldn’t see why a bag wouldn’t work. It’s interesting to see that there are a variety of known vegetable that are able to grow in the bag, you got yourself free food for as long as you want to grow in a bag! Also amazing to see that the cost to make this organic garden in a bag is low too, which is a win win for everybody because having a greenhouse makes no sense when they have organic garden in a bag right!
