Simple Steps to Growing Sugar Cane

Sugar Canes

Sugar cane is best grown in tropical and subtropical climates. Here where I live in the Bahamas sugar cane is grown on a wide scale by the Islanders and sold locally by the natives.

The best time to plant sugar cane is during the summer months since it is a warm-season plant. Sugar can resemble the bamboo palm, but this plant actually belongs to the grass family.

What I find so amazing about the sugar cane plant is the natural sweetness that can really excite your taste buds. The sugar is extracted and can be used to sweeten many mouth-watering recipes. In this article, however, we will be looking at how to grow and care for sugar cane.

1. When planting sugar cane gave plenty of room for this plant to grow. Sugar can loves organic-rich soil so make sure and accommodate your sugar cane with this type of soil.

2. Dig a trench or furrow that is about 6-8 inches deep and a few inches longer than the cane that is to be installed. Plant cane in rows of 6-8 feet apart.

3. Place sugar cane horizontally in the furrow and cover with soil.

4. Sugar canes should be well watered at all times to ensure the overall health of your plant.

5. Sugar cane should sprout in about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks.

6. Continue to keep the soil moist.

7. After sugar cane is established begin to fertilize with a complete fertilizer.

8. Another application in the late fall and spring is sufficient.

10. Sugar cane should be ready to harvest in about 11-18 months. Sugar canes can reach a height anywhere from 10-12 feet.

The final word

Planting sugar cane is so simple, just follow these steps and you will be on your way to sugar cane success.

  1. Sugar cane looks so easy and fun to grow! Does it prefer lots of sunlight, or can it grow ok in partial shade? Finding good organic soil and maintaining a nice irrigation regime are also key to success in growing these plants. Do you know where to order sprouts if you don’t live in a tropical place? I could grow them in the summer where I live. Great article! Thanks for posting.

    • Hello Ciara so good to meet you, sugar cane is a warm season plant that loves sunlight. But you can try partial shade if you have a problem with full sun. To purchase check your farmers market or you can order from amazon. Hope this helps, all the best to you and please let me know how it goes.

  2. Your post brings back childhood memories of sugar cane. I used to buy sugar sticks at the fruit market and enjoyed munching and crunching the cane and that natural sugar.
Your post on growing sugar cane was very enjoyable and had no idea that it was that easy to grow sugar cane.

I have moved to a colder climate and assume I would need a hothouse to grow the sugar cane. If we’re to grow sugar cane where would be able to buy the sugarcane seeds?
