Nothing can be more embarrassing by turning people off because your breath is not fresh or to have what some people call dragon or bad breath.

There is much reason as to why persons may have bad breath, it may be because of certain foods, gastrointestinal health, or oral hygiene. But whatever the case may be the good news is there are foods we can incorporate into our diet

that can go a long way in helping to fight bad breath and give us the confidence as we go about our daily lives. I have come across some persons myself and the experience was far from inviting.

I am also very conscious of my breath and do whatever I can so that I can speak at all times with the assurance that I will not turn people away.

Foods that cause bad breath

We all have those favourites foods that we love to eat but the unfortunate side is eating these foods in moderation or to have breathed freshers to use after eating these foods.

Garlic has so many benefits and can do so much as far as our health is concerned but eating a lot of foods that are prepared with garlic can work against us.

Brush teeth if possible or carry breath freshers to get rid of the odour.

Onions are another food that contains vitamins and all of that other good stuff but consuming too much onion can be a real turn off. Because onions can really give your breath a strong odour.

Brushing teeth or using breath freshers after each meal can go a long way in giving you the confidence as you talk with people.

Spicy foods may really appeal to our taste buds but have an enormous effect on our breath. Eliminate this problem by brushing or breath fresheners.

Fish whether canned or fresh can really be a problem when it comes to bad breath. Sure that fish dinner may have excited your taste buds while giving you such a memorable experience but be warned fish can give your breath such an odour.

If you cannot brush then carry some breath freshener or sugarless gum with you. Rinse mouth with water then freshens your breath with breath freshener.

Alcohol is not a food but the consumption of alcohol can really cause bad breath I mean really bad. The consumption of alcohol is not good so staying away from alcohol is really good.

Oral hygiene

Proper mouth care is so important such as brushing and flossing after each meal, seeing your dentist twice a year, the use of Listerine on daily basis can help to kill the bacteria that cause bad breath. Also, do brush your tongue.

Gastrointestinal problem

Has to do with the dysfunction of certain organs where foods are not being digested properly which requires medical help, the subject at hand is beyond the scope of this article

but persons who have this issue may experience bad breath. Getting medical help can correct this problem giving you the confidence to live a healthy normal life.

Foods that fight bad breath

1. Ginger– Ginger is very potent and can help kill bad breath. Swishing a cup of warm ginger with lemon juice in your mouth for a few seconds can neutralize bad breath.

2. Citrus fruits such as orange and grapefruit fight bacteria that is responsible for bad breath.

3. Water is not only good for our kidneys but keeping our mouths moist at all times because dry mouth can cause bad breath. Swishing water around in your mouth can also wash away food particles that cause bad breath.

4. Green tea can get the job done. Flavonoids that are found in green tea, helps to fight off bacteria.

  2. Thanks for your helpful article. There were simply more foods that are bad for my breath than I thought possible.
Of course oral health is a big part in this, if you got some infection or hole going, nothing will really work.

All these foods that you listed that are fighting bad breath, are about preventing future problems, right?

I wondered, would you know of any natural substitute for breath fresheners? I am not a big fan of sugarfree chews or sweets, nor do I want to use mouthwash all the time.

    Thanks in advance!

Natural remedies may include, Chewing on a few mint leaves, guzzle green tea, eating citrus fruits which stimulates your salivary glands and encourages saliva production that neutralizes the acids produced by plaque and removes food particles from the mouth.

Hope this help, all the best to you and have a wonderful day.

  3. Thanks, Norman for putting this all together. I struggle with many of those foods that contribute to bad breath and you are right about how they bring such joy when we consume them but then those around us have to deal with the fallout.
I was thinking about all those folks out there with coffee breath. Can they be helped?

    • Hello Joseph so good to meet you. It is justso amazing of the foods that are out there that can help us to fight bad breath. As for coffe it would be good to cut back on coffee first of all that requires dedcation, eating those foods that are recommended, also comsuming a lot of water beside mouth wash. These are just a few of the things that can be implemented to win the war on coffee breath. Hope this help, have a good day.

  4. Thank you for the very informative article…bad breath is really a huge issue for me…in fact not for me personally but if you are attending a lot of meetings it can be really annoying if other members have bad breath and are talking directly to you! 🙂
Didnt know that chewing nuts can help….solution now: always have a bowl of nuts in the meeting room so everyone attending can snack some nuts…beneficial for all 🙂

  5. I have suffered from bad breath as a side effect from eating foods I am allergic to. I am trying to incorporate more vegetables into my diet and your list gives me another reason to do so. I am also allergic to aspartame and can’t use a lot of mints or gums, but have had great success with TheraBreath Dry Mouth Lozenges

  6. I am a student at UCSC and I do not brush my teeth after breakfast, but before eating at the dining hall. If I can eat the foods that help my breath, that would be wonderful. They always have oranges available, so I think that I will start picking up one of those on a regular basis.

I also drink green tea over breakfast, so I will continue to do that. Are there any other teas that work just as well or only green tea? I really like Earl Gray and lemon, so I would like to know if they are also okay. I look forward to hearing your answer.

Thank you for sharing and I hope you make it a great day!
