The jasmine also produces beautiful white flowers so if you are ever thinking of installing a beautiful fragrant plant the jasmine is the plant for you.

My wife and I brought a jasmine plant a few years ago and planted it near our bedroom window and there are times in the stillness of the evening when the weather is cool and cozy the beautiful aroma that comes through our bedroom window from her jasmine plant is pretty amazing. So sit back and continue reading on how to grow these fragrant beauties both in and outdoors.

Things you will need to know

  • Planting Location
  • Soil Type
  • Watering Methods
  • Fertilizing Methods
  • Garden insect pest of jasmine
  • Disease issues
  • Ideas where to grow jasmine
  • Container grown jasmine
  • Growing jasmine indoors

Planting Location

When deciding to plant your jasmine look for an area that gets lots of sunlight seeing that this is a tropical, sub-tropical plant.

Soil Type

When choosing the soil type for your jasmine, it should be soil that drains well. Soils such as good organic soil mix will hold the right amount of water but will allow excess water to drain.

Watering Methods

To ensure that your jasmine has nice healthy blooms it is best to water your jasmine on a weekly basis. Ensure that the soil is somewhat moist at all times but not waterlogged because overwatering will cause root rot.

Fertilizing Methods

A fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassium will help your jasmine to produce nice healthy beautiful blossoms. It is best to fertilize during the growing season and remember before fertilizing read and follow the manufacturer’s label because the label is the law. The new stems should be pinched to produce new growth.

Garden insect pests of jasmine

As beautiful and fragrant as the jasmine plant is this garden beauty has its share of insect pests which includes

  • Aphids
  • Mites
  • Scales
  • Whiteflies
  • Caterpillars
  • Webworms

These garden insect pests can really cause damage from yellowing of the leaves to leaf drop, in the case of the caterpillars they cause destruction by eating parts of the plant’s leaves. The use of horticultural oils will bring these garden insect pests under control. Neem oil will also help to win the war on these garden insect pests

Disease issues of jasmine

  • Blight
  • Rust
  • Mildew

Disease problems to keep an eye out for when it comes to your jasmine are a blight, mildew, and rust.

These diseases can cause the leaves to have discoloration, necrotic patches, and streaked stems. Also, the leaves will wilt and die. What makes these issues a really big issue is the disease can spread from cuttings or can be passed from one young stem to the other. Treating the disease with baking soda and water spray will help.

Also applying a fungicide will offer some help. Ensure that your jasmine plant is getting adequate air circulation, this will help to eliminate or reduce the chances of your plant having fungal problems. The planting bed should be cleaned and cleared of disease leaves that have fallen to the soil’s surface.

Powdery mildew appears as a white or grey powder substance on the leaves of your jasmine plant. Applying a fungicide to the leaves will help to bring this disease under control. When applying fungicides read and follow the manufacturer’s label because the label is the law.

Ideas where to grow your jasmine plant

Here are a few places where to install your jasmine plant.

  • As a centerpiece in your garden
  • Can be installed alongside a fenced area
  • Looks nice growing alongside a wall
  • Can be placed in containers and the containers can be placed on your porch or patio
  • Your jasmine can be planted near your bedroom window for that sweet fragrance
  • Install near your living room window
  • Can be placed by your bathroom window
  • Plant on either side of your front door entrance

Container grown jasmine

Container grown jasmine is easy, while the container should have holes to allow water to drain after watering, the container should be placed in an area that gets lots of sunlight. The potting soil should be an organic mix to hold the right amount of water but allow excess water to drain. Fertilize and water as discussed above. Pinch new growth for more flower production and keep an eye out for garden insect pest and treat as directed. Keeping a pruner on hand is great to have because with a pruner you can keep your jasmine growing healthy maintaining its natural form.

Growing jasmine indoors

Bring the sweetness indoors by growing jasmine as a house plant. Follow the above process as we discussed when growing jasmine from containers. Once you have potted your jasmine in a container your jasmine plant will need 4 hours of sunlight or more to thrive or grow healthy. Place the container near a southern window to meet your plant’s light requirements.

The soil should be a bit moist and not waterlogged. The room should be cool and not hot to discourage flower production. The container should have drain holes to allow water to drain after watering and a saucer to catch and collect this water. Fertilize as directed, the use of a trellis is great to support your jasmine as it grows.

  5. Jasmine just happens to be one of my favorite climbers.
It is relatively tough and as you say has a beautiful aroma.
Given the right position and nutrient it can get out of hand and take over a bigger area than anticipated. A length of jasmine also makes a nice center piece on the dining table.
I really enjoyed reading you post on how to properly care for jasmine.
