Many cities and countries are starting to look like a mini forest as plants begin to emerge from concrete jungles atop building roofs, porches, patios, and even vacant lots. Urban gardens can be of any size, whether planting plants in pots that is a twist of container gardening.

To turning large vacant lots into farmhouses, many persons really like and are buying into this idea which is growing rapidly because of the need and the demand for more food production that is of good quality.

Benefits of urban gardening

1. Increase greenery- An advantage to urban gardening is when growing plants in these populated areas, where the air is filled with toxins from cars and factories, fumes from gas-powered tools, etc… the presence of plants helps to pull impurities out of the air so the air can be safer to breathe.

2. Urban gardening helps with the increase of food production-No longer do communities have to depend on their local supermarket alone, urban gardening now provides a means by which more foods are produced therefore putting less demand for food production from other sources.

3. Fresh foods-Urban garden ensures that you are getting fresh foods that are produced and provided for locally.

4. Pricing-It is good to know that because of the collective efforts of the community that takes on these projects persons can save that little extra.

5. Unity-Urban garden projects help to bring the community together as one which unites people.

6. Exercise-It is good to get that heart rate up, gardening is a form of exercise, therefore those that are involved have that added benefit of getting a good workout.

7. A sense of pride-Just to stand back and to see that you are a part of something great through the collective effect of each individual.

8. Travel time-Urban gardening can save the community travel time, because what you need is just a hand pick or step away.

9. Next generation-Urban gardening trains the next generation of survival and working together as one to accomplish goals, no matter how big.

10. Shade -These gardens may also help to produce shade.

11. Having total control-The community can grow its own foods without the use of pesticides, which is an added benefit.

12. Get away from it all- An urban garden can provide a peaceful place to relax.

The Final word

Urban Gardens are doing a whole lot of good as it provides for families. The idea of coming together as a community and putting projects together like this is certainly changing the lives of many persons as they introduce these ideas to their countries and cities

that are proving to be of great benefit and value, It is just awesome how these gardens are impacting lives in a positive way. 1. From what you say, this is becoming very popular and I can see why.
I would say a huge amount of satisfaction could be had from even a small amount of vegetables and herbs grown in tubs on a patio or balcony.
Then there is the community garden which will give more produce and variety with the added benefit of, as you say, bringing the community together.
Added to all that, the air we breathe is getting cleaner!
Everyone is a winner and, generally speaking, most people love gardening and getting their fingers into the soil.
So a fantastic idea to promote.

  2. I think Urban gardening is a great idea! It lets people that don’t have the space at home for a garden, to be able to grow plants. I have often thought about being part of this. Seemed like it would be a lot of fun too. I know silly because I have plenty of room for a garden. But the soil and everything is already there right?

  3. Hi Norman,
We have a local community garden that was a vacant block just 3 years ago and it is now a thriving garden. People are sharing the vegetables and herbs that they grow, and even the local primary school has some garden beds and the school uses the garden to teach children about gardening and nature! They are learning that food doesn’t really come from shops, and that the weather has a big impact on how well their food grows. With house sizes getting smaller and more people living in apartments it is a wonderful opportunity for people to ‘get their hands dirty’ and get in touch with nature. Keep promoting urban gardens – we need as much greenery in our cities as we can get!!

  5. Urban Gardening is something I have been following for quite some time, and something I really want to jump in to. I just recently started composting and I’m really looking forward to Spring coming around!

I enjoy the points you made about Urban Gardening. They certainly are becoming popular, and finding a small way to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life is certainly appealing.

I read somewhere about a couple in Kelowna BC, Canada who have really gone ahead of the game and started producing some amazing results. If I had the link I would share, but I’m sure a Google search will find some results.

Your grammar is a bit hard to follow sometimes! Fix that and you will be golden! I’d love to read more articles like this! Maybe about a specific city. Good read overall.

  8. That is a nice article. You gave an idea on how to make use of those unusual vacant place like roof top and other vacant spot and turn it into an Urban Garden. It is not pleasant if you live in a place with so much buildings around the neighborhood and all the food that you eat are not really fresh vegetable, including meats are frozen. It ‘s a good idea to have a small garden for vegetable that you can plant even in a roof top of a building. People don’t have to go to a busy street to buy frozen vegetables all they do is walk a few steps around the house and pick it up themselves. Thank you for such a wonderful article.

Roof top gardens are popular in the Architectural world. Going “green” and sustainable building is a growing trend in the field. These gardens are beneficial in many ways. One way in particular is that they provide excellent insulation and they also help with water conservation. This is a great article. Thanks for sharing.

  10. There is a handful of urban and communities gardens in my area. I have been curious about then and how they work. I really enjoyed reading your information. I like your information on Container Gardening. I have limited space and dogs that aren’t nice to gardens so I feel like this can be a solution. When I was growing up my family always had a garden, but it was a choir and a lot of work, to water, weed, care for etc. So I haven’t wanted one but in recent years with my increase interest on clean eating and healthy living. I really want one.

  12. Hi Norman,
I really enjoyed reading through your website. So much great information and a lot of good advice! I think your pages are well organized too, so I have very little to comment, but the only things I’ve noticed are:

    1. some sentences are cut in the middle and the rest of the sentence starts in the next paragraph. I’m sure you just hit return key when you were typing.

    2. Similar to above, there are some sentences which are kind of long, and could be made into two sentences, and some sentences were missing “.” at the end.

I’m sure if you copied your text into MS Word and ran a grammar check, you can easily correct all the minor errors which happen (to me too!).

But overall, a fantastic website and I’ll be visiting your site for advice in the future! Good luck!
